Guy Ben-Ary ist Künstler und Forscher bei
Symbiotica, dem künstlerischen Labor an der University of Western Australia, das
sich der Forschung, dem Lernen und der praktischen Auseinandersetzung mit den
Lebenswissenschaften widmet. Ben-Ary, als Künstler und Innovator in Wissenschaft
und Neuen Medien international anerkannt, spezialisiert sich auf
biotechnologische Kunstwerke, mit denen er unser Verständnis darüber, was
lebendig ist, bereichern will. Dabei konzentriert er sich auf Tissue
Engineering, Mikroskopie und biologische Bildgebung. Seine Forschung zielt auf
eine Reihe grundlegender Themen ab, die den Schnittpunkt von Kunst und
Wissenschaft untermauern: Leben und Tod, Kybernetik und künstliches Leben.
Ben-Ary hat sich bei vielen seiner Arbeiten von Wissenschaft und Natur
inspirieren lassen. Seine Kunstwerke nutzen Bewegung, Wachstum und biologische
Daten, um technologische Aspekte der heutigen Kultur und die Wiederverwendung
biologischer Materialien und Technologien zu untersuchen.
In seinem
Gespräch wird Guy Ben-Ary einige der Methoden und Theorien vorstellen, die für
seine künstlerische Praxis grundlegend sind, und beispielhaft vier seiner großen
Projekte der letzten zehn Jahre erläutern: MEART, The Silent Barrage, In-Potentia, und CellF (siehe unten). Dabei wird er Aspekte der
Terminologie, Ethik und Robotik als künstlerische Strategien diskutieren und
seine künstlerischen Ansätze erörtern, biotechnisch neuronale Netzwerke mit
künstlerischen, robotergesteuerten Körper zu
verbinden.
"CellF is the world’s first neural synthesizer. Its “brain”
is made of biological neural networks that grow in a Petri dish and controls in
real time it’s “body” that is made of an array of analogue modular synthesizers
that work in synergy with it and play with human musicians...[]
"There is a
surprising similarity in the way neural networks and analogue modular
synthesizers function, in that for both, voltages are passed through components
to produce data or sound. The neural interface we developed juxtaposes these two
networks and in a sense creates a continuum that creates one unified network.
With CellF, the musician and musical instrument become one entity to create a
cybernetic musician, a rock star in a petri dish."

und Stine Janvin (13. Mai) als Teil der Technosphärenklänge #3 im Haus
der Kulturen der Welt
auf.

Die dritte Auflage der Technosphärenklänge, die vom
Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Zusammenarbeit mit dem CTM Festival
produziert wird, präsentiert musikalische Projekte an der Grenze zu Kunst
und Wissenschaft. Drei Projekte - der weltweit erste neuronale Synthesizer, der
mit menschlichen Musikern spielt; Wassertropfen, die durch Schallwellen schweben
und geformt werden; und die Kopplung von Raumklang mit hochenergetischen Lasern
- machen aktuelle Vorstellungen von Materialität greifbar und reflektieren
grundsätzlich die Beziehung zwischen Natur, Technik und menschlichem
Bewusstsein. Alle drei Projekte erfordern intensive Forschung und ständige
Zusammenarbeit zwischen den Künstlern, Naturwissenschaftlern und Technologen. Am
darauffolgenden Tag werden Vorträge und Gespräche, die gemeinsam mit Art
Laboratory Berlin veranstaltet werden, die Forschung und die Wissenschaft
hinter den Aufführungen erläutern und die gesellschaftlichen Auswirkungen der
Werke diskutieren.

Guy
Ben-Ary
is an artist and a researcher at
Symbiotica (University of Western Australia, Perth), an artistic laboratory
dedicated to the research, learning and hands-on engagement with the life
sciences. Recognised internationally as a major artist and innovator working
across science and media arts, Guy specialises in biotechnological artwork,
which aims to enrich our understanding of what it means to be alive. Guy's work
focuses on tissue engineering, microscopy and biological imaging. His research
explores a number of fundamental themes that underpin the intersection of art
and science; namely life and death, cybernetics, and artificial life. Much of
Ben-Ary's work is inspired by science and nature. His artworks utilise motion
and growth and biological data to investigate technological aspects of today's
culture and the re-use of biological materials and technologies.
In his
talk Guy Ben-Ary will present some of the methodologies and theories that
underpin his artistic practice by using as examples, four of his major projects
completed over the last decade: MEART,
The
Silent Barrage, In-Potentia, and CellF (see below). He will discuss
issues related to terminology, ethics and robotic embodiment as an artistic

The third edition of
the Technosphärenklänge series, produced by the HKW in
collaboration with CTM Festival, will present musical projects operating
at the border of art and science. Three projects – the world’s first neural
synthesizer that performs with human musicians; water droplets levitated and
shaped by sound waves; and the interconnection of spatial sound and high-energy
lasers – make current notions of materiality tangible and fundamentally re-think
the relationship between nature, technology and human consciousness. All three
projects require intensive research and constant collaboration between the
artists, natural scientists and technologists. The following day, lectures and
talks hosted together with Art Laboratory Berlin will explain the
research and science behind the performances, and discuss the works’ social
implications.
